# AI eBay Titles: How UK Sellers Can Write Ones That Sell

AI eBay titles can save UK sellers hours, if you check every one. Prompts, 80-character templates, mistakes to avoid and the HMRC rules to know.

AI eBay titles are worth using in the UK, as long as you treat the AI as a fast first draft and check every title yourself. Ask it for the brand, item type, size, colour and condition in 80 characters or fewer, then correct anything it guessed.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide covers the prompt we would give an AI, templates for clothing and vintage, the mistakes that cost sales, and the tax rules that catch out sellers who suddenly list a lot more.

## TL;DR

- Use AI to draft titles, never to publish them unchecked. Brand, size, model numbers and materials must come from the item in your hand.
- eBay titles are capped at 80 characters, so every word has to be a word a buyer would actually search for.
- Give the AI a fixed structure and your own facts. Generic prompts produce generic, padded titles.
- Faster listing means you may reach HMRC's platform reporting threshold sooner. Keep records from day one.
- If you sell on Vinted too, write the facts once and adapt the wording per channel rather than pasting one title everywhere.

## What AI can and cannot do for an eBay title

An eBay title is a search string first and a headline second. Buyers type words, eBay matches them against your title and item specifics, and your listing appears or does not. That makes titles a good job for AI: the task is narrow, repetitive and rule-based.

What AI does well:

- Turns a pile of facts into a clean, ordered title in seconds.
- Suggests alternative wording buyers use, such as "trainers" against "sneakers" for a UK audience.
- Keeps a consistent structure across hundreds of similar items.
- Trims a long draft down to the character limit without losing the key terms.

What it does badly:

- It invents details. If you give it a photo of a jacket and no label information, it may guess the brand, the material or the decade.
- It pads. Words such as "amazing", "stunning" and "must see" take up space that should go to search terms.
- It defaults to American spelling and vocabulary unless you tell it otherwise: "sneakers", "pants", "gray".
- It does not know your item's flaws. A title that hides a stain or a missing part leads to returns.

eBay itself has added AI to the selling flow. Its Seller Centre says [AI-generated item descriptions are available to UK sellers in most categories on the eBay app](https://www.ebay.co.uk/sellercentre/news/2023-september/ai-enabled-description) (announced September 2023), and that you can use the suggestion as it is or edit it for accuracy. The same principle applies to titles: the draft is a starting point, and the accuracy is your job.

## The 80-character limit and how to spend it

eBay allows up to 80 characters in a listing title, spaces included. Our own guides on eBay listing titles and 80-character templates and eBay title examples go through the structure in more detail. Here is the version we give to sellers who are starting out.

A reliable order is:

1. **Brand**, because many buyers search by brand.
2. **Item type**, in the word a UK buyer would use.
3. **Model, style or line**, where there is one.
4. **Size**, where size decides the sale (clothing, shoes, bikes).
5. **Colour or material**.
6. **Condition or a defining feature**, such as "vintage", "boxed" or "BNWT".

Drop anything that is not a search term: punctuation clusters, capital-letter shouting, and filler adjectives. Do not repeat a word that is already in the title. Repeating it does not help you rank and wastes characters.

### Examples for clothing and vintage

| Item | Weak title (AI default) | Stronger title |
|---|---|---|
| Wax jacket | Amazing Vintage Barbour Style Coat Great Condition Must See | Barbour Beaufort Waxed Jacket Mens C40 Green Vintage Cotton Coat |
| Knitwear | Beautiful Soft Jumper Ladies Lovely Colour | Pringle of Scotland Lambswool Jumper Womens Size 12 Navy Crew Neck |
| Trainers | Cool Sneakers Great Shoes Sports | Adidas Samba OG Trainers UK 8 Black White Leather Used Good Condition |
| Vintage china | Pretty Old Tea Set Nice Gift | Royal Albert Old Country Roses Teacup and Saucer Vintage Bone China 1960s |

The weak titles are not wrong, they are empty. The stronger titles only work if the facts are true, which is why the details must come from the label, the box or the maker's mark, not from the AI's guess.

## AI eBay titles: a prompt that works

Most poor results come from a thin prompt. "Write an eBay title for this jacket" gives the AI nothing to work with and everything to invent. Give it a fixed template and your own facts.

Here is a prompt structure you can copy and adapt:

> You write eBay UK listing titles. Use British English and UK sizing words. Maximum 80 characters including spaces. Order: brand, item type, model or style, size, colour, material, one condition or feature word. No filler adjectives, no punctuation except hyphens, no repeated words. Use only the facts I give you. If a fact is missing, leave it out and do not guess. Give me three options and the character count of each.
>
> Facts: [brand], [item], [size from label], [colour], [material from label], [condition], [any flaw].

Why each part matters:

- **British English and UK sizing** stops "sneakers" and US shoe sizes slipping in.
- **Maximum 80 characters, with a count** makes the AI show its work. Check the count yourself in a text editor, because language models often miscount.
- **Use only the facts I give you** is the line that reduces invented details.
- **Three options** lets you pick the one that reads best, or combine the strongest words from two.

If you want the model to suggest keywords as well, run that as a separate step. Ask for ten search phrases a UK buyer might type for the item, then choose the ones that are true of your item and fit the limit.

## A five-step routine for checking every title

AI saves time on the drafting, not on the checking. This is the routine we would follow before any title goes live.

1. **Read the label.** Compare brand, size, fabric and model number in the title against the item itself.
2. **Check the count.** Paste the title into a character counter. Over 80 and eBay will not accept it.
3. **Search it.** Type the title's first six words into eBay and look at what appears. If your item looks nothing like the results, you have probably used the wrong item type word.
4. **Match the item specifics.** The title and the specifics (brand, size, colour, department) should agree. Mismatches confuse buyers and search.
5. **Mention what matters most.** If there is a flaw that decides a sale, such as a missing charger, the description must say it, and the title can carry a short flag like "spares or repairs" where it applies.

It takes about a minute per item once you are used to it. That is still far quicker than writing every title from scratch.

## Common mistakes with AI-written titles

| Mistake | Why it costs you | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Invented brand or model | Buyers return the item, or you get an "not as described" claim | Give the AI the label text and tell it not to guess |
| Keyword stuffing with unrelated brands | Breaks eBay's rules on title content and confuses buyers | Name only the brand you are selling |
| American words | Fewer UK searches match you | Specify British English in the prompt |
| Titles that are all adjectives | Nothing for search to match | Lead with brand and item type |
| Same title on every item | Your listings compete with each other | Vary size, colour and model per item |
| No check on the character count | Rejected or truncated listing | Count before you publish |

The keyword stuffing point deserves a second look. Putting a famous brand in the title when your item is merely "similar to" it is not a clever trick. It misleads buyers and can get the listing removed. Name what the item is.

## The same item on eBay and Vinted

A lot of UK resellers list the same piece on eBay and Vinted. The two behave differently, and one title does not fit both.

| | eBay | Vinted |
|---|---|---|
| Title style | Search string, up to 80 characters | Short and plain, brand and item first |
| Buyer behaviour | Searches by keyword, filters by specifics | Browses by category, brand and size filters |
| Where detail goes | Title, item specifics, description | Title, description, hashtags |
| Tone | Factual, dense | Conversational is fine |

The sensible approach is to record the facts once (brand, size, colour, material, condition, flaws) and let the wording follow the channel. An AI is good at this: give it the same fact sheet and ask for an eBay title and a Vinted title separately.

If you want a closer look at how search works on these platforms, our guide to marketplace SEO for listings covers it. If you are tempted to push out many listings at once, read the notes on bulk upload for eBay first, because speed makes checking even more important.

## What we think about AI titles

We build Ruit for people who sell the same stock on several marketplaces, and we use AI in the product. It drafts titles and descriptions for your listings, so you are not starting from a blank box every time. Here is our honest view of where that helps and where it does not.

The drafting is the dull part of reselling. Most sellers we talk to are not short of items, they are short of evenings. When you have forty things on the floor and each needs a title, a description and a photo set, the AI draft is what makes the evening manageable.

![What we think about AI titles, overview diagram](https://ruit.es/_astro/ai-ebay-titles-1.CKwKxsCU_1jTo4j.webp)

But the draft is not the title. The seller who handled the item knows the stitching, the smell, the marks on the sole. The AI knows none of it. So we think the right shape is: you supply the facts, the AI turns them into clean wording, and you read it before it goes out. A title is a promise to a buyer, and the person making the promise should be the one who has seen the item.

The other thing we would say is that writing titles is only one part of the job. The bigger risk for a multichannel seller is a sale on one site and the same item still live on another. That is why in Ruit you list once and publish to Vinted, eBay, Wallapop, todocoleccion, Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop, and when an item sells on one channel, stock syncs and the listing is removed from the others. The title gets people to buy, but the sync keeps you from selling the same item twice.

## Where Ruit fits in your listing routine

If you sell on Vinted and eBay at the same time, Ruit lets you list an item once and publish it to both, with AI drafting the listing text for you to edit. Sold items are removed from the other channels, listings on Vinted and Wallapop can be relisted automatically, and buyer messages from Vinted and Wallapop come into one inbox.

You can see the plans on the Ruit pricing page and decide whether it suits the way you sell. If you are comparing ways to produce listing text, our roundup of AI listing description generator tools sets out the options by type.

## Is AI allowed on eBay, and what about the tax side?

Sellers often ask whether eBay permits AI-written listings. eBay's own app offers AI-generated descriptions for UK sellers, as its [Seller Centre announcement](https://www.ebay.co.uk/sellercentre/news/2023-september/ai-enabled-description) explains, so the platform is clearly comfortable with AI help. What matters is that the listing is accurate and follows eBay's rules on titles and content. For the current wording, check eBay's help pages before you rely on any of this, because policies change.

The tax side is separate, and it is easy to overlook. AI helps you list faster, which can push you past the point where HMRC expects to hear about your income.

### HMRC thresholds in brief

| Rule | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Trading allowance | Up to £1,000 of gross trading income a year can be tax-free for individuals | [GOV.UK, tax-free allowances](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tax-free-allowances-on-property-and-trading-income) |
| Platform reporting | Platforms such as eBay and Vinted share data with HMRC if you sold 30 or more items or earned roughly £1,700 (€2,000) in a year | [GOV.UK, information for online sellers](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/information-for-online-sellers), 4 December 2024 |
| Telling HMRC | You may need to tell HMRC about income from online platforms, whether it is your main income or a side hustle | [GOV.UK guidance](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-you-need-to-tell-hmrc-about-your-income-from-online-platforms), 28 November 2024 |

Two points are worth stressing. First, being reported is not the same as owing tax. Selling your own unwanted belongings is different from buying items to resell. Second, if you buy stock to sell on, that is more likely to count as trading, and the allowance and Self Assessment rules then matter. The [HMRC guide to online selling tax rules](https://taxhelpforhustles.campaign.gov.uk/buying-or-making-things-to-sell-and-online-selling-tax-rules/) (18 August 2025) sets out the distinction for things you have made or bought to sell.

If you are unsure which side you fall on, ask HMRC directly or speak to an accountant who knows online resellers. Do not guess. Keep a simple record of what you paid for each item, what it sold for, and the fees you paid. Our post on eBay fees in the UK and the £1,000 HMRC threshold walks through how the numbers fit together.

## Choosing how to produce titles at scale

There are three broad routes, and each suits a different seller.

| Route | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| General chatbot with your own prompt | Occasional sellers, a few listings a week | Manual copying, no link to your stock, miscounted characters |
| AI built into eBay's selling flow | Sellers who only use eBay and want minimal setup | Limited to eBay, and you still check the output |
| AI inside a crosslisting app | Sellers on several marketplaces with regular volume | You still review each draft, and it only pays off if you list often |

If you are weighing up volume tools, our checklist for choosing a bulk lister, 5 criteria to choose the right tool, is a good place to begin. The main question is not which AI writes the prettiest title. It is whether the tool fits your routine: how you photograph, how you store stock, and how many channels you sell on.

## A worked example

Say you have a green waxed jacket, a size C40 label and a faint mark on the cuff.

![Green waxed jacket with a faint cuff mark](https://ruit.es/_astro/ai-ebay-titles-2.CpDupdoF_ZlqGko.webp)

You give the AI this fact sheet: brand Barbour, item waxed jacket, model Beaufort, size C40 from the label, colour green, material cotton, condition used, flaw small mark on right cuff.

You ask for three eBay titles in British English, up to 80 characters. A good result looks like this:

- Barbour Beaufort Waxed Jacket Mens C40 Green Cotton Vintage Coat Used
- Barbour Beaufort Mens Waxed Jacket C40 Green Cotton Used Good Condition
- Mens Barbour Beaufort Wax Jacket C40 Green Used Country Coat

You then check: the model name matches the label, the size is right, "vintage" is only used if you can justify it, and the counts are under 80. The mark on the cuff goes in the description and the photos, not the title, though you might add it to the Vinted version where the title is more conversational.

For Vinted you ask for a shorter title from the same facts, something like "Barbour Beaufort waxed jacket C40 green". Same facts, two sets of wording.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is there an AI for eBay listings?

Yes. eBay offers AI-generated item descriptions to UK sellers in most categories on its app, and there are also general chatbots and third-party tools that draft titles and descriptions. Whichever you use, check the facts before you publish.

### What is the best title for an eBay listing?

The best title uses all 80 characters for words buyers search for: brand, item type, model, size, colour and a condition or feature word. Leave out filler such as "lovely" or "must see", and never include details you have not confirmed on the item.

### Is AI allowed on eBay?

eBay's own selling app includes AI-generated descriptions for UK sellers, so AI-assisted listings are clearly accepted. You remain responsible for accuracy and for following eBay's title and content rules. Check eBay's current help pages if you are unsure about a specific case.

### How do I get an AI to write a title under 80 characters?

State the limit in your prompt, ask for the character count next to each option, and give it a fixed order of words. Then count the characters yourself, as AI tools often miscount. Trim from the end, starting with the least useful word.

### Will listing faster with AI affect my tax?

It does not change the rules, but more listings can mean more sales, and platforms share data with HMRC if you sell 30 or more items or earn roughly £1,700 in a year. If you are unsure whether you are trading, check the GOV.UK guidance or ask an accountant.
