# Check that the extension is connected

Where to see the real status of the RUIT extension, what each label means, and how long the app takes to notice that it has dropped.

The place to check is **the app, under Settings → Extensions**, not the browser. Each installed
extension shows up as a card with a colored dot and a label: **Connected**, **Disconnected** or
**Uninstalled**. Below it you will see the marketplace accounts that hang off it.

## Why the browser icon is not the place to look

There is a panel there, yes: clicking the icon opens a small one that says whether **that** install
is connected, and little else. It has five states (connected, connecting, no RUIT session, no plan
that includes it, and error), each with a single button. What you will not see there are **your
other extensions or the marketplace accounts hanging off each one**: that lives in the app only.

### What the badge on the icon means

The icon also warns you when something is wrong, with a badge on top of it:

| Badge                    | What it means                                                                                            |

| **Red exclamation mark** | Your RUIT session in that browser has expired. Sign in again at ruit.es and the extension comes back on its own |
| **Orange arrow**         | That version of the extension is no longer supported and needs updating                                    |
| **No badge**             | All is well                                                                                                |

> **Note:** There is no green badge: the absence of a warning *is* the sign that everything is in order.

## What keeps it connected

Having **your RUIT session open in that same browser**. The extension reads the session of the
browser it is installed in; if you sign out of ruit.es there, the extension goes to sleep even
though it is still installed.

## How RUIT knows it is still alive

The extension sends a signal **every 10 seconds**. The server treats the connection as good for
**30 seconds** after the last signal, so it tolerates losing two in a row without raising the
alarm. When it does drop, the extension tries again on its own: it waits between **2.5 and 5
seconds** and keeps doubling the wait up to a maximum of **1 minute**. If the drop was caused by a
**restart of our server**, it is back in under a second.

## What happens if you close the browser

If you close it altogether, the card turns **Disconnected** straight away. What does wait **15
seconds** is the warning and the expiry of the accounts, so that a flicker in your connection does
not fill the app with alarms.

If the machine goes to sleep or the network drops all at once, the app takes a little longer to
notice: a process checks every **2 minutes** and marks as disconnected any extension that has been
silent for more than **90 seconds**.

> **Warning:** If **14 days** go by without **any** of your extensions connecting, RUIT pauses the automatic work
> of your Wallapop and Vinted accounts. It starts again by itself the moment you open any of your
> browsers; one coming back is enough.

## What you see if it fails while you are working

A warning that blocks the screen, titled **Extension Issue**, with the name of the extension
involved. There are three cases:

| Warning                   | What happened                                                                             |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Extension Required**    | It was not connected. It is the only one of the three that also tells you since when        |
| **Connection Lost**       | It dropped halfway through the operation                                                    |
| **No Response**           | It did not answer in time; RUIT waits **45 seconds**                                        |

The third usually means the marketplace session has expired in that browser.
