Using several extensions at once

How RUIT works when you have the extension installed on several browsers or computers, and why each account stays tied to just one of them.

Difficulty: Medium 3min read

You can have the extension installed on as many browsers and computers as you like: there is no limit. What matters in this article is the rule that governs everything else: each marketplace account stays tied to the extension it was connected from, and RUIT does not go looking for it anywhere else.

How RUIT tells one install from another

Each install generates an identifier of its own the first time it starts, of the form ext_ followed by a long string. There is one per browser profile: two Chrome profiles on the same computer are two different extensions as far as RUIT is concerned.

Under Settings → Extensions you will see them as separate cards, and you can rename them with the pencil so you recognize them at a glance.

Choosing which extension an account connects from

If you only have one connected, RUIT uses it without asking. If you have several connected at once, connecting an account brings up Choose Extension, listing each install and how long it has been connected.

There is also a checkbox there, Connect to ALL extensions, which asks every one of your browsers for the session at the same time.

What happens when that account’s browser is closed

That account stops working until you open it, even if you have other extensions switched on. There is no sharing of work between installs: if an account is tied to your laptop and the laptop is off, RUIT will not handle it from the home desktop. You will see the extension-not-connected warning.

It is a deliberate decision, not a technical limitation: the alternative would be to use the session in another browser, which is almost always somebody else’s session, or another marketplace account.

Moving an account to another browser

Yes, and it takes care of itself: connect that same account again from the new browser and RUIT moves it across instead of duplicating it. The account now depends on the extension you have just synced from.

Deleting an extension you no longer use

Deleting it by hand

It has to be disconnected first: while it is still online the delete button is greyed out and RUIT asks you to disconnect it beforehand.

After a reinstall

The same thing happens if you reinstall the extension: the new install gets a brand-new identifier, so it arrives as a new card and the old one sits there, empty, until you delete it.

If you need to go over the install again, it is in installing the extension.
